Ashlyn is Haven Dog Training’s Chapel Hill-based trainer, serving dog owners throughout Chapel Hill and the surrounding area with private in-home training visits and board-and-train placements.

At home and outside, Ashlyn grew up with dogs. She was fortunate to see both their loving, cuddly side at home and their protective, working side on the family farm. To deepen her understanding of animals, Ashlyn studied animal psychology in graduate school. There, she found a passion for canine training and behavior.

Since then, Ashlyn has applied her knowledge in teaching pet dogs and their humans how to live harmoniously through training and play. She has extensive hands-on experience with basic & advanced obedience, sport & competition training, reactivity & aggression, personal protection work, and more.

Ashlyn considers herself a ‘forever student’ and continually improves her craft, learning from fellow dog trainers and industry experts. She currently trains and competes with her dogs in PSA, an obedience and protection dog sport.

Sometimes, the training a dog needs for the best support possible is 1-on-1 training. We will work with you individually to demonstrate how you can train your dog to follow basic commands. This program includes 4 hour-long sessions and is best for humans who have enough time to spend on continuous training with their dogs even after the completion of the program.

Reggie spent about 20 days training with her, where he worked on basic commands and e-collar training, and the difference is truly amazing. He came home calmer, more confident, and so responsive — it honestly feels like we got a whole new (but still very happy!) dog.

Kaylee was thoughtful, professional, and clearly cared so much about Reggie’s progress and well-being. The commands are clear, consistent, and easy for us to continue at home. He came back with several different commands under his belt and and e-collar to back them up. We were taught how to help our dog through stressful situations in public, how to heel while walking, how to manage distractions on walks & in public areas, a place command (this has been HUGE with managing our puppy and our older dog in the same household), and ideas on our to exercise our dog in a healthy way. We found the training to be balanced (not extremely strict, but instead focused on realistic boundaries for a family pet), which was important to us.

The communication with not only our trainer but with the owner of the company was incredible. We got daily text updates while our dog was staying with Delaney, pictures, and she also posted daily on her instagram which was great for watching our dogs progress! We really appreciate the lifetime support of this program as well- we can ask questions as they come up & don't feel as though we are left on our own without any resources after his training was completed. My rescue ex-hunting coonhound Dean went to stay with Ashlyn for a 4 week board and train this past summer and I cannot speak highly enough of the profoundly lasting positive changes Ashlyn was able to bring out in him! Before he went to stay with Ashlyn, he had absolutely no prior obedience training or house manners and was anxious all of the time without the structure of an obedience training practice, which devolved into problematic behaviors in the home (uncontrollable prey drive, incessant baying/whining, barrier frustration)- a very stressful period of time for both Dean and us. To add to the challenge for Ashlyn, he had also recently presented symptoms of laryngeal paralysis, which meant that he could not be trained on any sort of neck collar or it might interfere with his ability to breathe. Once Dean returned home to us, he was like a totally new dog. He is now much more bonded to us, content, less anxious, and has developed handler focus. His newfound ability to just be at peace and rest has completely changed quality of life for Dean. He is now able to be happy and just enjoy life with us after everything he has gone through, and this result is priceless. We felt that Ashlyn did a very thorough and clear job of translating the necessary information to us post-training in order to maintain his new behaviors. When he returned to us he had learned to walk on a loose leash (shocking for a tracking dog), gained 100% recall success in most settings, learned “place” which allows him to calm when he’s wound up (and has been key for us managing overheating from his laryngeal paralysis), and the resulting effect of the new structure in his life has made him a much more pleasant dog to be around. We have since moved away from Durham, but would absolutely continue to work with Ashlyn if we could and are eternally grateful for her teachings! It has been especially difficult to find trainers that understand the unique behaviors of hunting coonhounds and working breeds and Ashlyn absolutely understood our Dean and exactly what he needed to excel. Ashlyn took on an extremely difficult behavioral/health case with Dean and absolutely made something beautiful from it, which is a testament to her endless positivity and tenacious work ethic. Being just six months old, Hank was a handful. Ashlyn provided us with knowledge and tools to help us guide our boy to be a much more pleasant member of our family. Delaney was extremely knowledgeable, approachable, and a pleasure to work with.  She communicated with us daily about our dogs progress through text, photos, and social media.  After having our dog for a year and a half, we needed help with training. Our dog also had some resource guarding and aggression issues. We appreciated Delaney’s matter of fact, realistic guidance. Our dog wound up needing a full month of training instead of the original 15 days we had planned on. Although this cost us more time and money, it was definitely the right decision. Our dog Piper did the 20 day board and train program to address some reactivity issues, excessive barking, and proper leash etiquette. Kylee was so good with our girl! The difference is incredible, and Kylee made sure that we were confident in continuing her training after the going home lesson! Piper absolutely LOVED Kylee, which was so reassuring. We will be taking advantage of their regular boarding when out of town since Piper loved it so much. Couldn't recommend more!

He is a one year old Teddy Bear pup (a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise'. In the year we have had him he has been wonderful but he needed some training, for example: to come when called, he liked to nip while playing and some growling when a having something he shouldn't have. Our experience was amazing, if I could give more stars I would. Kylee, our trainer was remarkable with him. When he came home Kylee spent hours going over everything so we could continue all the commands and cues Tico had learned. I highly recommend Haven Dog Training. Tico was a great little puppy but he is even better!!
